Scars – The Scar Collection
The project seeks to investigate ways of coping with significant body scars and the personal experience they bring.
A scar is defined as “a mark remaining (as on the skin) after injured tissue has healed” (Merriam-Webster dictionary). However, scars also carry emotional baggage ranging from appeal and being an indication to an individual’s bravery to repulsion and being a constant reminder for a difficult event, the betrayal of the physical body and bad luck.

The project relates to scars as physical marks on the body. It is a visible thread to the underlying personal story and to the path that a person must follow to ease his or her distress.

The project develops a “therapeutic tool” that combines the esthetics of a scar with an individual’s feelings and thoughts about it.
Through a sensitive and structured process that ostensibly focuses on the physical characteristics of a scar, a person gradually reveals the scar itself. An individual also uncovers the range of his or her feelings and the personal ways of coping with the injury since the scar originated.
The treatment is unique in creating an object based on the actual scar by “peeling” and copying the texture in silicon.
The ability to observe and to touch the scar as an object independent from the body, as a separate, interesting and beautiful object created from different materials and colors, whether hidden or uncovered, allows the individual a new perspective and an opportunity to begin and/or continue to discuss the injury and its implications with those who are close to him or her.
In addition, the recognition of the process of change and the personal acceptance continues beyond the boundaries of the “therapy session.” They are also expressed in the right to modify the object and to suit it to the individual’s emotional state. Such modification encompasses the legitimate range from destroying it to wearing it proudly.
